The spread of the coronavirus has jolted awareness of hygiene as it relates to touching surfaces such as keypads. No longer in favor are contact-based modalities including the use of personal identification numbers (PINs) and keypads, and the shift has been sudden and long-term. Both customers and manufacturers were taken by surprise by this aspect of the virus’s impact and are therefore scrambling for solutions.

Touchless Biometrics

Touch-based biometrics has been the most preferred technology for access control systems. The corona pandemic has fueled the rapid adoption of contactless biometrics devices. Iris and face recognition have emerged as a suitable option for building a robust access control system while reducing the risk of corona transmission. Contactless technology allows for the secure identification and recognition of a person. Other important benefits of contactless technology include high accuracy, quick matching, versatility, and seamless integration with systems.

It is expected that contactless technology would play a vital role in the post-covid era as well. Biometrics have been already adopted in a wide range of sectors and will continue to play a crucial role in healthcare, law enforcement, education, border airport security.

Prevention of virus transmission in crowded places

One of the major challenges for the government is to contain the virus transmission in public places such as bus stations, banks, airports, malls, and fairs. This has resulted in the rapid adoption and deployment of thermal scanners in crowded places where footfalls are significantly high in number. Thermal scanners use contactless fever screening technology to assess a person's body temperature and trigger an alarm if it detects elevated body temperature. Several authorities have made the usage of thermal scanners compulsory for detecting the early signs of coronavirus.
